VERSE
The whole town
went crazy...the night that she died.
They found her face down...wearing only her pride.
she was a beauty...a
girl of sixteen
There were no answers...left there at the scene.
VERSE
Someone said a stranger...was
seen passing through.
A man of color...was all that we knew.
He was heading towards Selma...to march
and protest.
At least that's what we figured...and we made up the rest.
VERSE
They stopped him
in Mobile...and hauled him on in.
Asked him some questions...about where he had been.
His answers had fallen...on
ears that don't hear.
Hell, that was the south...back in those years.
CHORUS
He was a stranger...that
no one believed.
Could he have done...what we all conceived ?
Twelve on the jury...all south-ern bred.
The
outcome was certain...the verdict was read.
VERSE
When they found him guilty...the whole town was there.
We witnessed injustice...right there on that square.
In chains and in shackles...they led him away,
and
that look in his eye...still haunts me today.
CHORUS
He was a stranger...that no-one believed ?
Could
he have done...what we all conceived ?
The outcome was certain...and the verdict was read.
twelve on the jury...all
southern bred.
TAGG
twelve on the jury...with a gun to his head.
